Day 2 Kansas

June 7th, 2008 · No Comments

A very frustrating day. Forecast not particularly good for today. We could have played the higher risk squall line scenario to the north, which would have been a repeat of yesterday - poor chase conditions, or an even slimmer risk of storms breaking out in SE Kansas/Ne Oklahoma. We played the latter option and headed south.

After playing merry go round on storm cells in NE Oklahoma all afternoon with nothing really getting going we called it a day and headed back north. However, on our turn around, a discrete storm evolved in SE Kansas and became tornado warned. We were now losing light but decide to give chase as a tornado had been spotted on the ground with the storm. We intercepted the storm at Pittsburg and watched a wall cloud with what looked like a descending funnel and may well have been a tornado. Sirens going off everywhere in the town. Quite eerie as there was no lightning with this storm and very little precipitation so viewing was extremely difficult. Still it was an exciting end to a disappointing day.

Back in Kansas City overnight. Tomorrow looks a good day in Iowa.

We are preparing.

Mark & Al in Tornado Alley

June 6th, 2008 · No Comments

We arrived in Denver, Colorado and after a hectic first day positioning we are now chasing tornadoes in Kansas. There is a high risk of tornadoes all day today. Currently experiencing 44mph gusts (recorded) and chasing a long line of very active thunderstorms with tornado warnings issued.

The conditions are extremely windy, lots of lightning and golf ball size hail.

We are heading north east toward Kansas/Missouri.

A few photos from the first day are now in the gallery. In addition, a very short time lapse from a wild looking sky can be seen here Wild skies time lapse (2Mb). This was taken just before a squall line (line of severe thunderstorms) passed over.

Tornado Project - Countdown

We are now preparing for the Tornado Project adventure. The tornado season is under way and we will be flying to Colorado next week. We aim to hunt down, photograph and record the most violent storms on this planet. Check out this blog to keep up to date with our progress.
